  • A COOL WEEK, SUMMER'S LAST STAND AND FORECASTING FOR BRIDES

    2014-09-14T16:07:55.163Z

    Angry-Bride.jpg
I've said it before and I'll say it again; there is no higher pressure weather situation than forecasting for a bride on her wedding day.

Still, I find myself in these situations. Yesterday my wife was at a wedding in Massachusetts (Yes, just her. Everyone thinks TV is so awesome and glamorous but getting time off is impossible . I could tell my boss "Hey so my wife Mary is pregnant for a reason we can't quite figure, on...
  • FINE, FINE, FINE LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS WINTER

The way the Empire News satire forecast for this winter went viral tells meteorologists two important things:

    1. People don't read the article....they just look at the pictures and read the headline. If you actually read the "Empire News" piece you'll very quickly realize it was a joke. Everything on that site is a joke. It's like "The Onion." But people grab little nugget of information and run; it's a byproduct of the social media...
  • TASTE OF FALL? OR TASTE OF WINTER?

Here at The Weather Channel we have the ability to see what people are clicking on via our website and where they are clicking from. We call it the "Heat Map" as it displays activity as concentric rings shaded in red, getting larger with increased traffic from a particular city.

"Heat Map" is kind of an ironic name for it this week as BY FAR the #1 story people are interested in is the big cool snap. It...

Being a native New Englander transplanted in the south, I find it amusing how much LESS of a big deal Labor Day is down here.

In New England everyone takes the week off, there are clam bakes, barbeques and parties. The underlying message: Summer is OVA! Meanwhile in Atlanta not one of our friends had any kind of special party for Labor Day (or maybe we just didn't get the invite....single tear). The underlying message: Summer lasts...
  • REALLY, REALLY, RIDICULOUSLY GOOD LOOKING WEEK

The joke goes that I have the easiest job in the world because I "can be wrong all the time and not get fired."

(Don't even get me started on that by the way. If you are a real estate developer and NOT Donald Trump then I'd argue you've likely made some mistakes along the way...they just don't happen on live TV. Actually, even he's made a lot of mistakes...just look at Atlantic City right now. The only people...
  • THIS WEEK FEATURES A PROGRESSIVE PATTERN...KIND OF.

    2014-08-17T19:44:59.940Z

Looking over the various computer models, I find this weeks pattern in the Northeast unusually hard to sum up with just one phrase. It's progressive . Kinda. Except there's a block in there too. It's dry ..except showers creep in by late week. Well it's warm . Meh, actually it's just about average by the numbers.

Maybe, just maybe,  this week can't be summed up that easily. Take me for example... you could go with: Tight suits, smart ass,...
  • SUMMER 2014: ROUGH WORKWEEKS, AMAZING WEEKENDS

    2014-08-10T19:47:41.001Z

Life is all about timing. Sure, it's cliche. But it's also true.

Example: My deal with WCSH in Maine was about to expire and at that exact moment The Weather Channel was like, "You know what we don't have enough of? Thin guys in SUPER tight dress pants who like to make pop culture jokes at 5 am"  BAM. Deal done.

Another example: The weekends in the Northeast this summer, in general, have been very pleasant. Even...
  • UNSETTLED WORK WEEK, BUT A DIME OF A WEEKEND

    2014-08-04T12:55:09.068Z

    NE_COOL_SETUP.png
The weather this week will be much like my television presentation; sometimes it's pretty awful but it'll come through when it really matters.

Translation: The work week will feature a good amount of shower activity, but the weekend looks clutch.

(By the way if you don't know what "a dime of a weekend" means, step into the hallway, listen to some hip hop songs and then rejoin the class quietly. It's a good thing, trust me)

    Ok,...
  • SEVERE STORMS ON THE MOVE, AND IS SUMMER OVER ALREADY?

    2014-07-27T20:16:07.473Z

First I'll address the ongoing severe weather threat and then we will move on to the workweek ahead.

There are several Tornado Watches currently issued for the Ohio Valley and into parts of the Midwest as powerful thunderstorms rumble east along a potent upper level disturbance. Severe weather is a lock for these locations and, in many spots, already a reality this afternoon. However the severe thunderstorm threat for our region is a little more complicated.

    Please...
  • WARM AND MUGGY, JUST THE WAY YOU ALL LIKE IT....RIGHT?

By most measures I'm a classic, borderline stereotypical, New Englander.

Dunkin Donuts is just "Dunks" and, yes, I'll take that coffee "regular" even though that has no clear definition other than that it involves somewhere between 3 and 25 packets of sugar.

I will argue, completely straight faced, with another man that the only reason people hate the New England Patriots its because "Tom Brady is just too perfect as a human being, physically and otherwise."
